Born Again to Win: Living Life Empowered by the Holy Spirit!
The Power of the Gospel
The true gospel is not clearly understood these days by most people including many Christians. Much of what is preached and taught today concerning the gospel isn’t really the true gospel at all! The basic definition of the word “gospel” is, to preach or proclaim good news. It’s not proclaiming bad news to people about their situation rather it is to preach the good news.
If all a particular speaker has to say is that a lost world is without hope and doomed to receive the judgment of God and eternity in hell, how many of you know that isn’t good news? That is not a true proclamation of the gospel! There may be truth in many of the things that are said, but simply because one speaks truth doesn’t necessarily mean that we have presented the gospel.
The good news is — in spite of who you are and what you have done, God loves you anyway! The grace of God has extended everything that God is to you free of charge! Through Jesus Christ God has made a way for everyone to be reconciled to Him. Its not based upon your performance and all you have to do is receive it by faith. Now that is good news!
I would like to share a verse of Scripture with you today that contains a wealth of truth concerning the power of the gospel of Christ. Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
This verse clearly teaches that the gospel is the power that accomplishes salvation in the life of a believer. A word study on the English word “salvation” will reveal a greater depth of revelation for us. Unfortunately, when we read the word “salvation” in the English language it doesn’t carry all the meaning and significance that it did in the original Greek language. When we think about salvation we connect it to eternal life and forgiveness of our sins. It is true that our salvation includes those benefits but it also includes much more.
The Greek word translated as salvation is the word “soteria” which literally means: deliverance, preservation, soundness, prosperity, happiness, rescue, or general well-being. The word salvation is speaking of everything the Lord Jesus Christ purchased for us by His death and resurrection; healing, deliverance, prosperity, and soundness — everything that God desires for you!
The power that accomplishes this for you is the gospel of Christ. There are many people who are born again and have a genuine relationship with God who do not have the power in them to produce the things that they need.
There are lots of people who believe that God is the answer but fail to experience the answers to the problems in their lives. There are believers who experience no more victory than those who do not believe. There are people who believe in healing, but are not healed, who believe in prosperity but are not prosperous, who believe in deliverance but remain under oppression. Why is this so? There should be more evidence of Biblical salvation in our lives! I believe it is because of the way many have been taught to believe the gospel.
Many people live below their rights and privileges in Christ because of a failure to believe or correctly understand the gospel. Unfortunately, over the years, in an attempt to explain the Church’s lack of power and inability to experience answers to problems, doctrines of men have surfaced. Too often the Church has been passive and inactive, relinquishing all responsibility — thinking “whatever will be, will be” and everything that happens is the will of God. That is bad doctrine!
Jesus took hold of the will of God and prayed and ministered with an active faith to accomplish the will of God in the earth! We in the Church must do the same. Romans 1:16 teaches us that God has made a way for every Christian to experience victory in their lives.
We must be willing to acknowledge that if we are failing to experience answers, somewhere or some way we do not fully believe or understand the gospel. Because the power is in the gospel to accomplish salvation! If Romans 1:16 is true, and it is, then it cannot — it cannot be God who is withholding His power and blessings from us!
I hope to encourage you today as Mark 1:15 says, “Repent ye, and believe the gospel.” If necessary, change the way you have been thinking about the gospel. Begin to believe every good and perfect gift from God is yours!
